What is HTML and what is it used for?

HTML is an abbreviation for HyperText Markup Language, so to translate this to human language you might say that HTML can be used to structure the content of a page. And the usual usage would be a webpage.

You can start writing HTML from any text editor (usually not from a word processor) like Notepad or vi. When you are done typing your file you can save it with the extension 'html' i.e. 'myfirsthtmlpage.html'.

If you are using a graphical environment like Windows, Mac OS or any Linix X11 environment you will probably notice that the icon for this file changes. Usually when you now open the file it will launch your webbrowser showing your newly created HTML page.

In the following courses we will show you how to correctly use the markup language to create a layout for your pages.

Why do we only say layout? Because for styling (bold texts, coloring, fonts) it is recommended that you will use CSS.
